Homer calls NASA complaining about the boring launch coverage. When NASA officials arrive at Moe's, Homer assumes they're out to arrest him for his prank call - so he blames Barney. It is revealed that NASA wants to send an "everyday blue collar slob" into space and both Homer and Barney are offered the chance.

When a sobered-up Barney beats Homer in every astronaut test, a bottle of champagne is opened to announce Barney's victory - which Barney promptly chugs. He goes crazy and steals a jetpack. His joyride is short-lived, however, as he crashes into a pillow factory and is subsequently run over by a marshmallow truck. Strangely enough, the champagne was non-alcoholic! Homer is declared the winner by default and is blasted off into space with two veteran astronauts.

The astronaut's frustration with Homer grows with each passing moment and a fight breaks out. The cockpit door flies open and Homer saves the crew by using an inanimate carbon rod to pin the door shut.
